Strong Tourism Performance in Harghita County in 2024: More Than 220,000 Visitors

In 2024, tourism in Harghita County continued to show stable performance. Throughout the year, a total of 220,772 tourists arrived in the county, spending 504,526 overnight stays in local accommodation units.

The peak of the tourist season was clearly during the summer months. August proved to be the strongest month, with 26,185 arrivals and 63,175 overnight stays recorded. Another outstanding month of the summer season was July, with 25,294 tourists and 61,213 overnight stays, highlighting the region’s strong attractiveness during the summer period.

Tourist traffic began to increase gradually from the spring months: in May, nearly 20,000 arrivals were already recorded, reaching its peak during the summer. In autumn, a gradual decrease in visitor numbers was observed; however, September and October still saw a significant number of tourists visiting the county.

Annual data show that tourism in Harghita County has stabilized in the years following the pandemic. The 220,772 arrivals represent only a 1.03% decrease compared to 2023.

According to the statistics, Băile Tușnad leads the list of the most visited destinations with 49,183 tourists, followed by Miercurea Ciuc/Csíkszereda with 37,175 visitors, and Odorheiu Secuiesc/Székelyudvarhely with 21,385 tourists. Other destinations in the ranking include Praid/Parajd(19,551), Toplița/Maroshévíz (16,408), Gheorgheni/Gyergyószentmiklós (13,017), Vlăhița/Szentegyháza (12,401), Zetea/Zetelaka (10,100), Borsec/Borszék(8,381) and Ciumani/Gyergyócsomafalva (5,640).

The more than half a million overnight stays clearly indicate that Harghita County remains an attractive destination for visitors. Natural attractions, spa resorts, mountain hiking areas, and the rich cultural offer all contribute to making the region appealing to tourists throughout the entire year.
